Licensing

Chambers has a number of licensing specialists offering real strength and depth of representation in this area of law. The areas of licensing covered by our licensing barristers span the whole range of licensing law including alcohol licensing, entertainment venues, gambling, private firearms licensing and taxi licensing.

In respect of alcohol and entertainment, our licensing barristers advise and represent: individual and corporate applicants for licenses, licensing agents, licensees, licensing authorities and other interested persons such as residents and the police.

This expertise is complimented by chambers’ demonstrable excellence in other complimentary and overlapping areas of criminal, public, planning, environmental and employment law, which enables Chambers to offer clients a comprehensive service, dealing with all aspects of getting a given premises up and trading, or of obtaining planning and licensing permissions for changing what is done at existing premises. Such a comprehensive and coherent approach is of course especially important when seeking to open or oppose the opening of a potentially contentious new business, such as a restaurant or nightclub in a residential area.

Our licensing barristers regularly appear before the licensing sub-committee and also advise and represent clients on appeal in the Magistrates’ Court and on appeals by way of case stated and Judicial Review in the High Court.

Stuart Jessop, who leads the Licensing Team in Chambers, is recommended in the Legal 500 UK Legal Directory for his work in this area.
