Grayling Announcement: Criminal Team Response

July 21, 2014

The Criminal Team has campaigned hard against the Lord Chancellor’s planned reforms over the last 18 months. It takes the view that if the Criminal Justice System in this country is to work, viability for both sides of the profession needs to be assured. Yesterday’s news does not achieve this. Indeed on one analysis, it risks driving a wedge between practitioners whose combined dedication and commitment makes the system survive. Details of what passed between the Bar’s leaders and the Lord Chancellor are emerging – this was not a decision in which the wider Bar had any input. The Criminal Team expects there to be an EGM of the CBA shortly. In the meantime, the Team intends to continue its opposition to the Lord Chancellor’s plans and will continue to do everything in its power to support its solicitors.
