The trial of Anthony Ayres started in front of Mrs Justice McGowan at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday. Mr Ayres is alleged to have brutally attacked an acquaintance called Kelly Pearce at a friend’s address in Canvey Island in November 2015. The jury have been told that Mr Ayres was on life licence for a previous offence of murder at the time. The Crown’s case revolves around eye-witness evidence of the friend, CCTV footage taken from the area and DNA/blood spatter expert evidence. Mr Ayres denies the offence, asserting that he came upon the deceased after she had been attacked. The trial is expected to last 3 weeks or so.
