Jill Barrett will be one of a panel of expert speakers on ‘Parliament, Trade and Treaties’ at a live online event hosted by the Institute for Government on 13 July at 14.00-15.00. The panel will examine how Parliament currently scrutinises international treaties and what more parliamentarians should do to ensure effective scrutiny, especially in relation to trade. It is part of a one-day event on the theme: ‘Five years of the Department for International Trade: what progress has been made?’.

Jill is widely recognised for her expertise on the international law of treaties, implementation of treaties in domestic law, and parliamentary scrutiny of treaties. Last week she advised the new House of Lords’ International Agreements Committee on how it could improve its work, as part of its review of its progress during the first year of its operation. She spoke at a private roundtable event whose proceedings will be summarised by the Committee as part of its forthcoming report. It follows up on the Committee’s inquiry last year. into its working practices, to which Jill contributed.
She is author of the Good Treaty Practice Handbook
