Sentence in Old Bailey Sex Ring Trial

The six men convicted of various sex offences committed in the Aylesbury area from 2006-2010 were sentenced to a total of 82 and a half years today at the Old Bailey. They had been convicted in July following a lengthy trial at which the two complainants had given evidence live in court over the course of some three weeks or so. Both complainants spoke – in terms – of consenting to the sexual intercourse that had taken place but the Crown secured convictions for rape, on multiple occasions, against five of the six defendants on the basis that the consent was not in fact genuine given all the circumstances and the degree of grooming involved, described by the trial judge in his sentencing remarks as ‘grotseque’.The case was unparalleled in terms of the number of defendants originally on trial, 11, the quantity of documents involved and the task in presenting so complex and detailed a case in a way that the jury could follow.
It was prosecuted by Oliver Saxby QC leading Alan Blake of Thames Valley CPS and Patrick Duffy of 23 Essex Street.
